DEFINITION OF DRESSES FOR FUNCTIONS AT THE ISTANA NEGARA (NATIONAL PALACE)

If a Function specifies a dress code we should dress accordingly:

  • Formal National Dress


  • This dress consist of:

    (i) Tanjak (Head-dress);
    (ii) Black Baju Melayu (“Cekak Musang” Collar);
    (iii) Black Samping;
    (iv) Black Bengkong;
    (v) Black Socks; and
    (vi) Black Leather Shoes.

    (Without the kris for evening functions)

  • National Dress - Non-formal


  • This dress consist of:

    (i) Black Songkok;
    (ii) Baju Melayu (“Cekak Musang” Collar);
    (iii) Black Songket Samping;
    (iv) Black Socks;
    (v) Black Leather Shoes.

  • Western Dress

    Dark Lounge Suit

    (i) Dark Lounge Suit;
    (ii) White collared shirt;
    (iii) Dark tie;
    (iv) Black socks;
    (v) Black leather shoes;
    (vi) With Songkok for Muslims.

    White Tie (Evening Dress) or Tail Coat

    (i) Black long Tail Coat;
    (ii) White Waist Coat;
    (iii) Stiff (starched) white shirt;
    (iv) Wing Collar;
    (v) White Bow Tie;
    (vi) Black Trousers;
    (vii) Black Socks;
    (viii) Black Leather Shoes.

    Dinner Jacket 'Black Tie' or 'Smoking'

    (i) Black Jacket with Silk-faced lapels or white Shell Jacket; (tuxedo)
    (ii) Stiff (starched) white shirt;
    (iii) Soft Collar;
    (iv) Black Bow Tie;
    (v) Black Cummerbund or White Waist Coat;
    (vi) Black Trousers with Silk Stripe;
    (vii) Black Socks;
    (viii) Black Leather Shoes.

    Morning Dress

    (i) Black Tail Coat;
    (ii) Black Waist Coat;
    (iii) White Shirt;
    (iv) Plain (Stiff Turndown) Collar;
    (v) Grey Tie;
    (vi) Stripe Black Trousers;
    (vii) Black Socks;
    (viii) Black Leather Shoes.

    (Black Silk Hat is worn for Official Functions)

Prohibited Dresses for Ladies

(i) White Kebaya
(ii) Sam Fu
(iii) For other dresses, the following rules should be adhered to:-

  • The kebaya hemline must be below the knee.
  • The sarong of the kebaya must not have a slit either on the side or back.
  • The Coli (sari blouse) must not expose the belly and it should have sleeves.
  • The Cheong Sum must be ankle-length, with sleeves and the slit should only be up to the knee.
  • The hemline for skirts (western dress) must be below the knee.

Prohibited Colours

  • Royal Yellow
  • Royal Blue
  • All white dress
